Diabetes involves the hormone insulin.  The pancreas releases insulin so your body can store and use sugar and fat from the food your eat. 

​Diabetes can occur with any of the following:
a) The pancreas does not produce any insulin
b) The pancreas produces very little insulin
c) The body does not respond to insulin appropriately.  This condition is know as "insulin resistance".
